Why am I starting a newsletter?
I always hated writing in school, I was always a math guy. I would be more upset if I got a 95% in a math exam than if I got 50% in an english exam. So going into university I studied Finance and Computer Science since I like numbers.
But between those two disciplines, I became more drawn to Computer Science. This is what the difference between the two areas felt like:
Finance = How to make money $$$
Computer Science = How to create + help people = $$$
Although I like having the knowledge about finance, say for my own personal investing, it is NOT my calling.. I can’t imagine anyone saying that finance is their calling. So coding is what I decided I want to become great at. It’s the perfect storm of numbers + creativity.
So anyway why am I starting a newsletter / substack? You know how when you solve a math problem, they say you need to show working? I feel the same thing when I try to code an app. Newbie me would just go straight to my computer and start coding away, which can work for simple apps. But when the app becomes a little more complex, I feel like a child running into the waves at a beach and then suddenly finding myself at the bottom of the Atlantic. Similar to how you can’t solve a tough math question all in ur head, you can’t code an entire app in your head. You have to write it down. Every time I write it down on a page or a whiteboard, the fog dissipates and I can see clearly where I need to go and what I need to do.
I also noticed some of the successful people I respect talk about writing morning pages. Not necessarily a journal per se, but when you wake up in the morning, just write 3 pages of whatever comes to your mind. It helps with mental clarity and creativity. I’ve been doing it for 2 years and I definitely can’t live without it now.
Lately, I have been wanting to write more than just the 3 pages. There are entire topics, concepts, ideas and thoughts I just want to get out of my system. So during my morning pages I realised I should start a newsletter on substack. It’s also a great way for me to organise my thoughts and package them nicely instead of just word vomiting. I want to do this weekly so subscribe if you like✌🏾
